How to Find the True Cause of Your Sleep Problems and Fix Them

Welcome back to Breathing for Better Sleep. In this episode, host and sleep expert Dr. Fred Eck about one of the most common questions people have when their sleep feels “off”: how do you actually get evaluated for sleep apnea, and what happens during that process? Together, they break down the role of sleep tests, the differences between home and in-lab testing, and the critical numbers doctors look for when diagnosing sleep disorders.

Dr. Fred Eck explains why so many sleep issues go undiagnosed, how your sleep health connects deeply with conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes, and why understanding the root cause of your sleep issues, not just the symptoms is essential for real, lasting solutions. Expect practical advice on signs it’s time to get evaluated, why partners often notice problems first, and what happens during a sleep study. You’ll also hear about the limitations of certain tests, the importance of airway imaging, and the surprising range of treatment options beyond CPAP masks.

If you’re curious whether your tiredness, snoring, or restless nights deserve a closer look or if you simply want to demystify the world of sleep evaluations, this episode has you covered with down-to-earth answers and actionable next steps.

Blog Post: Unmasking Sleep Apnea, Real Answers from the Experts

Sleep issues are some of the most commonly overlooked health concerns, yet their impact can reach virtually every corner of our daily lives. On the latest episode of Breathing for Better Sleep, leading sleep expert, Dr. Fred Eck, looks at sleep apnea evaluation and why looking “under the hood” matters so much.

Why Sleep Apnea Evaluation Matters

Dr. Eck wastes no time highlighting a stunning fact: sleep disorders impact nearly half the population, but most people don’t get evaluated until major medical issues arise. He draws a comparison, just as we routinely check blood pressure and blood sugar, we should be screening sleep health, especially since untreated sleep apnea can increase your risk of diabetes by 500% and is a leading cause of high blood pressure. Unfortunately, healthcare often waits until a problem becomes unmanageable before digging deeper for a root cause.

Home Sleep Tests: More Accurate Than You Think

One myth Dr. Eck quickly dispels is that sleep studies need to be done in a lab. Today, over 90% of sleep evaluations can happen at home. Not only is this more comfortable for patients (you get to sleep in your own bed, with your own pillows!), but it’s often more accurate. Trying to measure genuine sleep when you’re stressed in a strange environment rarely works, and most people simply sleep better at home. As Dr. Eck points out, “If you sleep naked, you can’t do that in a lab!”

However, lab tests still have their place, especially if other serious medical conditions are suspected. But for most, a simple at-home test reveals what’s really happening at night.

Beyond Just the Numbers

Many people hear about “AHI” apnea hypopnea index and fixate on that single number. Dr. Eck cautions that AHI, while commonly used, doesn’t tell the whole story. For example, you could have a normal AHI but experience frequent “respiratory disturbances” that disrupt restorative sleep, especially if you struggle with anxiety, depression, ADHD, or even if you’re a child. The message: real diagnosis goes much deeper than just a number. It takes a nuanced approach and understanding of other indices and factors to get a complete picture.

Airway Imaging: Finding the Why

The episode takes a fascinating turn when Dr. Eck explains that sleep tests show us “what’s going on,” but rarely tell us “why.” This is where dental and airway imaging come in, 3D scans can reveal narrow airways, jaw issues, or posture problems that a simple sleep test can miss. Understanding these hidden causes is the only reliable way to fix the problem for good, rather than just mask symptoms with a CPAP machine.

CPAP Isn’t the Only Answer

For years, CPAPs (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure machines) have been the go-to treatment for sleep apnea. Dr. Eck reveals that this solution only truly works for about a third of patients because it doesn’t address the root cause. Plus, pressure on the machine often needs to be increased over time, which can even increase health risks if not managed properly. There are actually hundreds of other dental, surgical, regenerative, and lifestyle treatments available, something Dr. Eck is passionate about sharing with patients.

It’s Never Too Late to Ask “Why Not Me?”

Perhaps one of the most empowering moments in the episode is the reminder that anyone with concerns snoring, daytime tiredness, frequent headaches, or even a family member noticing odd sleep patterns, should get evaluated sooner rather than later. Sleep apnea and airway issues are progressive and worsen over time, but tackling them early can yield dramatic improvements and even reverse issues like crowded teeth, headaches, and chronic fatigue.

The evaluation process itself? Simple, approachable, and often started with a free telemedicine chat, according to Dr. Eck. The most important part is being curious about your own health and not dismissing sleep complaints or odd symptoms.

Sleep is foundational to health, more important, perhaps, than even nutrition or exercise. Take the time to listen to your body, ask questions, and get the answers you need. Your future self will thank you for it!
